The Latest BreakingNews Stories

This is a summary of news stories from the 5:00 morning news on WTAE, Channel 4

At 5:00 the beginning story was "Officer killed" - A wanted man and shot and killed the lower borough police officer, Derek Kotecki last week. The cameras focus on the crowd of mourners and a sign that reads "God Bless Officer Kotecki and his Family". Family friends were interviewed, along with members of the community and other police officers. He was a husband and father of  two sons and had been a 8 year veteran. Next, there was talk of memorial services being held.

At 5:05 - Still talk of officer Kotecki. An event and moment of silence being held in Forest Hills. Goes to story with interview from Chuck Williams, a Forest hills police officer. He talks about how every officer hopes they will be able to go home at the end of the day, but for some, they just are not that fortunate.
These stories on Officer Kotecki all share the idea that the police are good and the man who shot him is obviously bad. The view that the community and the police of his department and surrounding areas are all good people.

Next story about a memorial fund set up at S&T Bank on William Penn Highway. Info on website.

Back to the news desk with a new story- A cashier held up, now the search for the suspect. Suspect is on the run after Dollar Store is robbed in East Liberty. There were no injuries, but the suspect got away.
This story can create fear in the viewer, convincing them to be wary of the East Liberty area and to be frightened to go shopping in the area.

Next big story - The "Occupy" protests. There is discussion about those in downtown Pittsburgh, those in New York, and other parts of the world, such as London and Rome. When describing the protests around here, the news explains that the protests were not as violent and were mostly peaceful. However, the news shows protests in London and Rome to be very violent. The police were involved and sprayed tear gas into the streets.
Watching this story can convince the viewer that other countries are very violent, and just make our own country look much safer than these other places. Again, establishing fear in the viewer. The U.S is good, but other countries are considered bad.

Next a break form news and instead a look at traffic in the Cranberry area.

Then moving on to a story about the Steelers - Rashard Mendenhall and how he will start Sunday at the game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars. We have to hear about kickoff and how to get highlights after the game by tuning back in to channel 4 at 6:30.

Finally back to the news desk where we are told about upcoming stories that we must stay tuned for after the commercial break.
Commericals:
1. Sliverado. "the best selling pick up in PA" and Western Pa Chevy dealers, "the #1 selling cars and trucks in Pittsburgh for the last 10 years". Trying to convince the viewer that everyone in Pittsburgh buys Chevy.
2. Vision Works 2 for $99 special. "looks that work"
3. Window World. Family owned window business in Pittsburgh. We see the whole family in the commercial. Trying to show  that as a viewer with a family, you should buy these windows cause we would understand yu better.
4. Excela Health
All these commercials were pretty much focused on places in the Pittsburgh area. The focus was on an adult audience from this area. the news is local, therefore it makes sense to have local advertisers as well.

When commercials end back to the news desk for weather. Mention of weather at kickoff. That is considered most important at this time.

And finally lat story- Baby Saved by 911 call. Parents did not  know CPR so they called 911 and the baby was saved. The view of the police and 911 is again very positive.
